Apple Large screen iPod Touch in Future Plus & Apple Partnership?

Filed under Digital products by shary on 01-02-2010

According to Techcrunch, we can soon expect to see a iPod touch, which would make it more akin to a tablet PC than a portable music & video player with app support. One of the problems with the iPod touch and similarly the iPhone is the relatively small screen. Sure, it’s bigger than most portable devices, but it’s still not quite large enough for optimal productivity.

By stepping up the screen size, not only will it improve productivity, you may even see users actually “work” within business apps such as Excel on the iPod touch. Try working in Excel on the iPod touch or iPhone on such a small screen is nearly impossible. In fact, I should point out that natively the iPhone and iPod touch don’t support Excel. There is a workaround however.

Apple tends to change industry paradigms and break new ground. Certainly, Apple enabling a wide-scale VoIP over 3G/4G data connection would be a huge paradigm shift.

techie-valetines-day

Whether that special someone is a lovable geek, or totally tech-challenged, we’ll help you find the perfect gift for him or her to this Valentine’s Day.

The malls are doused in red, hearts keep cropping up in every display window, and a nonstop barrage of jeweler’s commercials implore you to buy something shiny. Valentine’s Day must be just around the corner. While you could always make the last-minute dash for chocolates, buy flowers out of a bucket on your local freeway off-ramp, or rack up a four-digit credit card bill for something in a red velvet box, we’re of the opinion that gifts that get used every day are the ones that get remembered. And these days, that means all things high-tech. With that in mind, check out some of these practical but luxurious tech gifts to spoil your special someone with this year.

For Her:

ipod-nanoApple iPod Nano

It may not be the most creative Valentine’s Day option, but think of the iPod Nano as the safest bet on our list – the digital equivalent to chocolates. Besides offering either 8GB or 16GB of storage and a full color screen that can handle video, the Nano has recently been updated with a video camera and lower price. Make sure to pick her favorite color from the palette of nine and take advantage of the free laser engraving. Just keep the pet names to yourself – nobody wants a love note from Snookums engraved on their MP3 player.

5 Ways To Improve Your iPod

Filed under Digital products by shary on 27-01-2010

Ways To Improve Your iPodWhen the iPod first came out, it was regarded as Apple’s greatest savior, and those people who did say that were spot on.

The iPod has become the golden cash cow that all companies strive for in a product. Bring out any related 3rd party product and it will be snapped up.

However, is it all that special?

… Sure it saves you from taking your computer around with you while you listen to your favorite MP3s, but so did a portable MP3 player. It looks good…so how does that help performance?

It has video playback! Hmm…I think I could be beaten here…however it has been found that under 6 million users have actually downloaded anything video related, that is 4% of users, so not a great success.

The iPod family is large, and expensive. The iPod shuffle is the cheapest of the lot, however it has little in the way of usable features that make it stand out from the MP3 players…also no USB port. The nanos do look nice, and show a little picture of your artists album, easy to see when in your pocket.

So I have devised 5 ways to improve your iPod so that it actually seems like something worthwhile.

Better iPod #1.

Why have 4GB iPod when you are only going to store many hundreds of MP3s, impossible to hear on your 1 hour commute. Why not use the capacity to save your private work, documents or other sensitive information? The iPod however can not be used as a full time hardrive, it will break in a few weeks.

Better iPod #2.

DJ with your iPod. Set up the ultimate party playlist in iTunes, and sync it to your iPod. Plug it into the party amp with a mini jack lead, lock it out of harms way, and then party away. You should make up different playlists so that you can cater for different audiences.

Better iPod #3.

The iPod calendar. If you use iSync on your Mac to sync your iCal calendars, you will have appointments on the go. You can choose which iPod calendars you copy, including ones you’ve subscribed to as well as ones you’ve made yourself.

You can’t sync to-do list items, but date events copy across ok. Go to Extras > calandar to view a month at a time on your iPod screen. Days with appointments are marked, and clicking on one will show you everything about that appointment.

Better iPod #4.

Better music encoding. This plays in iTunes and iPod but very little else. Consider raising the quality level of the encoder to 192kbps, open iTunes’ preferences and click importing.

If you want more compatible encoded results, switch to MP3 encoding instead. Pick the highest quality, and use 192kbps, and variable bit rate.

Better iPod #5.

Accessing the iPod music files. There is a simple little bit of software that allows you to access the tracks (just say you lost the originals, obviously, and it is called Audion, which is now free.

Launch Audion –opens in new window– , connect your iPod and either click on the iPod icon or choose your iPods name from the iPod menu.

The playlist window will show all the tracks on your iPod. You can drag files in, and you can drag items out as ways to improve your iPod for better performance.

Review: 4th Gen iPod Nano — We Want Our Square Form Factor Back

_mg_0261

Here’s a hard truth: Even if Apple decided to carve its new Nano out of petrified poo and bless it with a Braille display, the interface alone would still make Cupertino’s latest flash-based music player leagues better than the competition. So what’s our opinion of the new Nano?

Well, it’s just like the old Nano, just a little roomier (fine) and shaped like an airfoil (weird). This new aerodynamic form doesn’t seem to have any discernible functional purpose, but the Triscuit-shaped Nano had some distinct advantages over this new 4th gen model: It was a better piece of fitness gear, fitting more comfortably into sporty armbands and the tiny pockets so common to the backs of running shorts. The old screen orientation also allowed you to control video content more intuitively, though the new elongated shape is better for navigating long playlists.

Sure, that’s a decent upgrade—as is the price-to-gig ratio—but unless you absolutely need to shake-to-shuffle (spazz) or will be building an airplane out of iPods, the best thing about the new Nano is how flooded eBay’s gonna be with cast-off 3rd gen models.

Valentine’s Gifts for Car Lovers: Super Car Accessories

Filed under Digital products by shary on 25-01-2010

For those whose beloveds are car lovers, valentine gift ideas are easy to make since an array of fashionable yet advanced car accessories are available. Presenting car lovers with car accessories not only give them a thrill, but gift them road safety and happiness.

Car GPS

Along with the increasing number of car buyers, the importance of GPS navigators is generally recognized for today’s complex road network. The significant advantage is that GPS navigators can offer the most time-saving or shortest way to car drivers when they are hesitating about which way to go, based on the current locations of the cars and the specified destinations. Nowadays, the fast developing technology enables gift givers to have a great number of advanced GPS navigators to choose from, such as built-in, portable, handheld GPS navigators, etc.

Car MP3 FM Transmitters

The car MP3 FM transmitter can transmit audio signals to a car FM stereo radio, thus car drivers can listen to pleasant music by fixing the radio to a certain frequency. This novel music player eliminates the complex operations of changing CDs or MDs. More importantly, car drivers can choose their favorite songs, or delete any songs at any time, rather than being bound to the fixed song choices or skipping to other songs manually when the current song is not favorable.

First cheap iPod Touch knock off clone?

Filed under Digital products by shary on 23-01-2010

Well, no. Although that’s what PMP Today is calling it – while pointing out it’s been available on micsourcing since the end of July – I suspect that the similarity intended was to the iPhone, and given that the iPod Touch was also inspired by Apple’s ultra-successful phone… well, you see where I’m going with this.

Look closer and there are some good reasons not to invest in this clone. For a start, though we complained about the iPod Touch’s faintly parsimonious capacity, this only holds 2GB. The Portronics-made device does have a mini-SD slot to add another 4GB and the touch screen is only a shade smaller at 2.8″. Supported formats are MPEG-4, AVI, WMA, MP3 and JPEG and it shoehorns in a speaker, FM tuner and microphone, although given it appears to be thicker even than an iPhone that’s not quite as impressive.

It’s not always easy to buy a Valentine’s Day gift for a man/women. Most don’t get excited by unwrapping a beautiful package that holds clothing or accessories inside. But they certainly appreciate Valentine’s Day gifts that do stuff. Choose any of these Valentine’s Day to help him or her realize how well you know him or her – and how much you care.
The iPod Touch does everything an iPhone does, without requiring him or her to change his/her  phone plan after Valentine’s Day. Depending on how much memory you choose (8, 16, and 32 gigabyte models are available), he/she can stash many  songs, watch movies and play games on the widescreen display, and download his/her  favorite Apps.

How to make sense of digital video files

Filed under Digital products by shary on 21-01-2010

If you want to transfer a CD onto your iPod, computer, or cell phone, you can always rip the disc to MP3 and reasonably expect it to play on all of your devices. But things aren’t quite as simple if you want to do the same thing with a DVD.

Digital video files are complicated, and they come in thousands of varieties. The devices that play digital video are equally complex. A video that plays fine on your computer, may not play on your iPod or mobile phone.

There’s no simple solution for making video formats easy to deal with. But with any luck, by the end of this tutorial you’ll have a better understanding of how digital video formats work and why they can be so fickle.
